Peruvian poet, journalist, political activist and feminist. Born in Barranco, Peru, on May 27, 1901. Died in Lima on July 11, 1989. Magda Portal was a pioneer in the avant-garde literary movement of the 1920's, publishing the magazines Flechas (Lima : 1924); Trampolín; Hangar (Lima : 1926) and Timonel; Rascacielos (Lima : 1927). Poet and Nobel Laureate (1945) Gabriela Mistral was born Lucila Godoy y Alcayaga in Vicuña, Chile, in 1889. Mistral was an active member of the League of Nations and served as Chilean consul in Italy, Spain, and Portugal. She taught Spanish literature in the United States at Columbia University, Barnard College, and Vassar College, and at the University of Puerto Rico. Her works include Desolación, Ternura, and Tala .
